We’re now in the midst of a true wild and exciting winter weather pattern. A pattern promising the frequent revisit of snow, fuelled by major cold. The blizzard is now hammering Atlantic Canada and was the 3rd system in a mere week to hit the Northeast. The next arrives tonight and is likely to snarl the Friday AM commute. A 5th system looks to bring a fresh covering to the Mid-Atlantic Sunday into Monday.
This helps beef up the regional snow pack ahead of the first in a series of major shots of arctic air. Potentially the coldest air mass since the mid-1990s.
ECMWF snowfall through the next 7 days.
Next 10 days.

In between the systems that will simply add to what’s already on the ground (remember, especially in New England that snow depths are already in feet…) we’ve got some very impressive shots of arctic air. Following the Friday system, temps may reach the winter’s low to date, 9F in NYC Sat AM. Following the Sun-Mon system, even colder air dives in with a chance at near zero Tuesday AM. Boston’s lowest so far is -2, it may well surpass that Tuesday. Then there’s more systems and more arctic air poised to dive south. I am particularly impressed by the 192-240 hour period on the ECMWF. The mother of all cold shots may drop south with this high as thicknesses dip to 482dm over Lake Superior and even 498 as far south as Chicago.
Cold shot No 1 (Sat AM temps)
A VERY impressive cold shot No 2 (Tue AM)
Latest ECMWF surface shows the systems which gather in the Rockies and slide east on the southern flank of the arctic high.
Not every day do you see these thicknesses this far south!
2-metre temps to reflect the above for Cold shot No 3!!
Following day… -15 Boston.
