For New York City, the projected 24-36 inches of snow were fantasy but to the north and east, it was a different story. An all out blizzard raged on Long Island as well as up into eastern Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts got hammered to heavy blinding snow driven by 50+mph winds as well as waves which laid to coastal flooding.
There’s no question, this snowstorm was run of the mill for the Big Apple with from what I can see, a mere 8-12 inches falling. Further east and north, widespread totals of 12-20 inches were achieved with pockets of 25-30 inches.
Here was a radar image capturing very heavy snow over Boston and surrounding southern New England. Winds gusted 60-65 mph along coastal Long Island but on Nantucket, they gusted to an impressive 78 mph.
Latest snow totals.

Despite the storm, national snow cover remains low at just 27.7%.
As for Alaska where it’s been considerably warmer than average over the past 12 months, temps plummeted this morning to -58.
Here was yesterday morning.
While frigid up in Alaska it was record warm on the Plains. Check out how far north the 70s reach!
The 73 in Rapid City, SD tied the all-time January record.
This cold over Alaska takes a dive south early next week on the back side of potentially TWO more snow systems.
This post was scheduled for release last night but unfortunately the website was down so that’s why it’s not available till now. Apologies.
