Snowstorm To Be Followed By -14C In UK, -20C Netherlands, -40C Czech Rep With Snow In Africa

Well I must say the GFS has done a pretty decent job with the snowfall across parts of central/southern Britain as well as Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France where up to 10 inches has fallen even at low levels.

Even without the snow, it will be cold but where you’ve snow on the ground, expect it to be 3-5C colder.

Much of northern Britain missed out on the ‘system’ snow but snow showers may bring some coverings today.

As that system dives through Europe, high pressure is already building and this setup of snow then high pressure means some severe cold for both the snow covered parts of the UK as well as the near continent.

This is a strong high too.

Notice on the surface maps that the bitterly cold air even reaches the Mediterranean through next week. Severe cold really anchors over the heart of Europe with some spots possibly approaching the -40C mark.

Without snow cover, parts of rural Britain could still get below -7 or -8 over the next 4 to 5 nights under clear, cold skies but where there’s snow cover, it’s possible some favoured areas get to -14 or -15CC like we saw in Norfolk back in January 2013 following the previous SSWE.

BIG PATTERN SHIFT FROM 5-DAYS AGO WITH NICE TELECONNECTION STILL SHOWING

It’s interesting to see that mirror teleconnection once again showing between North America and Europe.

A powerful COLD surface high of nearly 1045mb will build over the North Sea into early and mid next week while a monster 1055 high dives out of Canada into the Western US around the same time frame. Just days ago we saw a long fetch moisture plume extend way out into the Atlantic and Pacific which hosed the western flank of both continents in a highly zonal pattern. Now, AS FORECASTED, we’ve that increasingly amplified pattern with serious cold dominating both continents.

Warning Up?

Modelling is certainly hinting at that mid week onwards for the far west of Europe. However, let’s watch the models over the next 2-3 days because they often rush mild air back in too quickly in these situations. If it does warm-up I wouldn’t panic as this setup will return in January.
