Significant Early Snowfall For Western Canada?

While it may be looking and feeling like summer on the East Coast finally, folks Out West may be asking the question, what’s happened to summer…

In fact head further north.. Barrow, AK to be exact and summer is already over! The top image of wind, wave and snow action was captured this morning on Alaska’s North Coast!

Take a look at the latest warning chart off from the National Weather Service. Yes that’s a WINTER WEATHER ADVISTORY in northwest Montana.

Often to get big eastern ridges and lot’s of heat, you have to get a decent trough back west. Sure enough there’s an October level trough driving unusually cool air south. How often have you heard that this summer?

Cool and clear enough tonight and tomorrow night that the first widespread frost is expected over western Montana and Idaho.

Think it’s wacky, try looking at both ECMWF and GFS snow charts through the next 7 days. They look like this!

What significant snowfall for Western Canada and possibly the high elevations of Montana and Wyoming over the next 7 days? Yes, it’s possible.

GFS agrees

The 7-day mean 500mb height anomaly off the GFS supports the chill and enough chill to support widespread snow.

Here’s the ECMWF 500mb height anomaly mean day 3-10. Quite the trough to support 10-15 below normal temps and snow over the Canadian and US Rockies while it remains warm on the East Coast. The heat eases this weekend for cities such as NYC down to Nashville but returns next week as reinforcing cool air and troughiness digs south over the Rockies.

Here’s the latest CFSv2 temps through the next 4 weeks. Note the dark blues appearing over Arctic Canada week 3!
