With the exceptions of the West and perhaps surprisingly, East Coast, it’s been a cool, wet but comfortable, low energy summer with a distinct lack of 90 degree heat.
The East Coast itself has been average to slightly above average but that’s largely down to warm water keeping the air more humid thus keeping nights warmer.
Unsurprisingly, July was coolest since 2009.

To put this summer’s coolness in perspective, cities stretching from the Plains to East coast have seen far fewer 90s than normal.

Despite warmer than normal, there’s been far fewer 90s up and down the East Coast with NO heatwave (3 day stretch of 90+) north of DC.
Memphis, TN back in 2007 endured 28 straight days of 95+, this summer they’ve had just 1.
Following a very cold winter and coldest March day in recorded history (high of 5F), Kansas City is also enduring a cool summer with a maximum of just 96. Here’s a chart from the NWS showing summer maximums with noteworthy cool summer maximums highlighted. Coolest was just 90 back in 1915.
