Showers & Thunderstorms Dominate Europe, Med Next Week, UK To Turn Very Wet, Windy!

Written by on May 31, 2014 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

The weather pattern is currently dominated by a ridge of high pressure extending from the Azores up towards Scandinavia providing a decent weekend with a mix of sun and cloud and warm temps. Expect low 20s in Madrid, Paris, London up to Stockholm. The shower and thunderstorm chances increase the further south and east you head across the continent and if vacationing down in the Med, expect plenty of shower and storm activity over the Spanish Costas, Balearics on east.

The mean ridge remains persistent over Scandinavia through the next week to 10 days while the lowest heights will be found the further south you head.

The strong heights of this weekend in the west including Ireland, the UK and near continent collapse some through next week and so low pressure will press east from the Atlantic bringing wetter, windier and cooler weather here. Plenty of warm, humid air pushing out of Africa into southern Europe with cooler air in the mid and upper levels, means continued heavy showers and thunderstorms widely. Looks like Scandinavia, where the ground is driest, will be the place to be this summer.

The pattern we’re seeing now, looks likely to persist throughout the upcoming June through August period.

Here’s the latest GFS surface charts through the next 8 days.
