As shown in today’s video. The ridge is establishing itself over the UK (initially), promoting temperatures into the low and mid 20s for SE England and the mainland coastal plain tomorrow and Saturday but in stark contrast and as pointed out here with a good 5 days now, flooding is grabbing the headlines over the Balkans.

Through the next 7 days we’ll see the trough return to western Europe while the ridge really explodes over the eastern continent. This still looks like a prime setup for the first heat wave conditions of not only the year but in years. Modelling is rather bullish is sending temperatures into the low and mid-30s over Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Russia with mid-20s reaching Helsinki, Finland.
Here’s a satellite view from earlier showing the large swirl associated with that Balkans low.
The below GFS 500mb charts show the replacement of the ridge with a much lower height field over the UK and because of the strength of the ridge further east, the descending trough gets deflected and stuck off NW Portugal. The model eventually pushes the low north, bringing the arrival to cooler and more unsettled weather to the UK.
Here’s the 500mb heights and the changing coming through the next several days.
Check out the GFS daily maximum temperatures across the continent and how core of warmest air not only shifts east but intensifies.
