Before I getting into the theme for tonight’s post, I wanted to show you the HUGE snow cover remaining across Canada. Some 90% of Canada’s area remains covered on April 10. That would actually be impressive had it been mid-March never mind a month later.
Sure there’s only 8% of the US now white but keep this in mind when the chill comes charging down the Plains late weekend into early next week.
Hudson Bay may challenge some sort of record for late breakup of ice given that it still looks like January up there.

Ok, so we’ve a lot of weather on the way but before we even talk about a storm, it sure is spring-like out there. What a splendid day across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Warmer than expected may I add. Here were the highs today.

Looks like Denver, CO topped out at 81 degrees today. It will warm into the 70s Saturday but then get hit by SNOW, yes snow later on Saturday evening. Upwards of 3-6 inches is possible across Metro Denver and then highs will be stuck in the upper 30s/low 40s Sunday. What a shift coming but hey, it’s Denver and this does happen more often than you’d think.
Check out the temperature difference over the Plains today (above) with projected afternoon temps Monday afternoon.
Projected snow according to the latest ECMWF run shows 3-6 inches from Denver west into the high country. This could be the city’s biggest snow of the season believe it or not.
Cold start coming up Tuesday morning.
Widespread 20s from North Dakota-Minnesota to North Texas, some record 10s likely in places with 0s in the CO Rockies.
BTW, it was somewhat stormy over Nashville, TN this afternoon. Check out this webcam shot.
Here’s what the ECM surface is looking like for the upcoming storm. While it’s all about the wintry precip and big temp drop along the Front Range into the Plains, BIG rains raises concern for flooding from the mid-Gulf coast to into the OH Valley.
Dynamics for severe weather come together Sunday. Check out the big thermal gradient at 850mb.
Severe weather also threatens.
Risk for tomorrow (Sat)
Bigger risk Sunday as system gathers strength and temp difference increases.
Flooding is a threat from LA-MS up to Ohio early next week.
As the chill slides east through next week, warming builds once again Out West and this comes east. It’s April afterall!
Brief post again tomorrow!
