When looking through the various charts this morning, there was one thing that grabbed my attention. The GFS and to an extent the ECMWF, has snow even in Africa in the coming days. That would be impressive given the averages are way up there by now. It should be getting warm, not cold in the desert by now!

Here’s the latest GFS snow forecast through 144 hours.
Here’s a close up of the Mediterranean and projected ‘snow on the ground’ for the same time period. Impressive to see what it’s showing for southern Europe and the Med islands but check out northeast Algeria into Tunisia…
Here’s a google map of the region snow’s expected in.
Don’t see much in the way of mountains that would make snow easier to come by, this far south. Snow is unusual in this part of the world even in the heart of winter, never mind spring.
Rather than looking at just the snow charts, let’s go further. Does the 500mb, 850 temp charts support this snow?
Check out the 500mb, 850 temps and 2 metre temp anomalies at 144.
Here’s the 2 metre temp departure from normal.
There’s our answer and if correct, yes!
Even looking at the 500mb height anomalies throughout Africa, notice below normal heights dominate, interesting!
Even if this snow in Africa doesn’t materialise, seeing this on the models this late, is still amazing.
I’m not forgetting the chill and snow shower threat we have across Ireland, UK and western Europe but I’m focusing on the bigger, more eye catching and unusual event and I’m sure you’ll understand that. Be sure to check out the video for chart analysis of this rather exciting late winter pattern.
