Following the passage of today’s cold front, temps dropped from a balmy 10-12C early this AM to a much fresher 6 or 7C this afternoon. If you live in higher parts of Wales and Scotland you may encounter snowfall this evening, driven in by a strong WSW wind.

Heavy, blustery showers spread across parts of Ireland and particularly Scotland tonight through tomorrow with the potential for hail and thunder but the bigger threat comes into the weekend as a front slows down as it crosses UK and Ireland airspace. The problem is that we have building high pressure over the continent while a deep 968mb low wants to swing a moisture rich frontal boundary in. The front all but stalls over Ireland and the West of Scotland Saturday and Sunday. With a sub-tropical component to the source of rainfall, the tallies are likely to really mount up.
Here’s a look at the ECMWF surface/precip chart through the next 168 hours. Note between 66 and 90 hours, the charts are almost identical with the boundary stuck in place. Expect a rather gloomy late Friday through Sunday period over mu7ch of Ireland and the West of Scotland. We could be talking local flooding with upwards of 2-5 inches of rain. Watch nearby river levels.

Little change on the horizon unfortunately as the NAO looks firmly anchored in positive territory. Expect much of the same type of weather pattern well into March.
