Iberia Storm Generates 81 mph Winds In Andalucia, Heads For Med! Another Follows Tue!

A lot of attention has been on Ireland and the UK of late but the focus of bad weather in Europe last night into today is further south over Iberia. Those wishing for a little milder, more settled weather than over the UK and Ireland will be disappointed to find conditions strikingly similar.

Here’s a look at the surface chart from magicseaweed, com last night showing a strong 984mb low slamming into northwest Spain. As forecast, that system did generate hurricane-force wind gusts south of the centre and this did raise threat levels to ‘high’ up and down the Atlantic coast of Iberia because of the damage threat from wind and wave.

Here was last night’s wave height projections. Estimates suggest 34 to 36ft against the Portuguese/NW Spain coast.

Top wave heights according to Meteorologist Steph Ball based in Gibraltar was 24ft at the Santander buoy off Santander (north coast of Spain), not as high as expected along there may well have been bigger swells off the mid Portuguese coast.

That system continues to bring coastal gales and strong winds along with heavy rain widely across Iberia today as the circulation pushes through the Bay of Biscay.

That low will track east into the Med where gales, heavy, flooding rains and big Alpine snows will rull through the middle half of the workweek. Another storm system follows and slams the Atlantic coast of Iberia later in the week.

Thinking about taking a short break, take my advise and don’t head for Iberia or the Med just yet!

Along with the high wind, wave and rain, the model has plenty of snow over the high Iberian plateau and especially over the Pyrenees. Look out Tuesday as this thing gets into the Med and pulls copious moisture up against the southern Alps from the Med. More big shows can expected. It’s already snowing heavy in some areas right now.

Note the snow over Ireland and the UK (Will discuss this and the late week storm in a video today)

Here comes that next system for Iberia on Tuesday.

Then conditions improve but all eyes return to the north with the next big low for Ireland and the UK.
