Thousands spent the night in cars and stores across the South following the much anticipated winter storm. It sure was a cold night and today hasn’t been much better.

Here’s a few memorable shots.

This morning marked day two of Atlanta gridlock!! A scene from the walking dead as mentioned by AccuWeather’s Anthony Sagliani.

Following the Southeast snowstorm, Henry Margusity of AccuWeather made mention that with the exceptions of Missouri, every US state had at least some snow on the ground and of course that includes Florida.

Note the dusting that extends into the NW corner of the Panhandle. Very rare to see.

PATTERN TURNS STORMIER INTO FEBRUARY

As we head into the weekend, warmer air will gain ground across the south while still very cold air continues to feed in from the north. An increasingly active southern branch jet sets the stage for an increasingly storm pattern into next week. Modelling suggests a major snowstorm for the Central Plains into the Mid-Mississippi Valley.

We see a system bring snow this weekend but the real deal comes mid next week.

Here’s the ECMWF snow forecast through 96 hrs.

That’s a lot of snow extending from southern MO/northern AR to Ohio with an swath of 18 inches.

By 240 the model extends a 12 inch swath up into Philly, NYC and Boston. Sure enough the models have another sizable system tapping Gulf moisture next weekend.

See today’s US video for more on the surface analysis of the upcoming 10 days off the ECMWF.

Below is the latest CFSv2 weeklies and note it has plenty more cold to come. Next week is less cold than what we have now but week 2-3 appears to turn brutal again.
