It was a very cold start across the Upper Midwest but not the coldest of winter with Minneapolis hitting the mid teens below while Chicago hit 11 or 12 below which is well under the forecasted -20 the ECMWF had and well shy of the season’s coldest of 16 below. Both GFS and NAM did well with Chicago but less well with Minneapolis where they had 2o to 23 below and as for down in Ohio, well they were underdone with their 5 to 8 below. Actual lows hit an impressive 20 to 22 below in a few central spots across Ohio this morning and these numbers were the coldest of winter thus far.
Check out the low temperature chart via Jesse Ferrell. Note 33 below Minnesota, -22 Ohio. Also the winter storm gathering in the South.

Here was the lows according to weather.com
The low of 9 below in Detroit was a record for the date.
Here was the scene in Chicago mid morning. What a stunning day with a great view via WeatherBug. However, you know it’s cold when you see the buildings steaming like they are in this image.
Here’s a frigid sunrise view from the Chicago suburbs.
Of course the main interest is with the major winter storm that’s now well underway from Southeast Texas through LA, MS, AL, GA, SC and NC with a pronounced snow band drapped across the central portion of these states. Rain and freezing rain is affecting southernmost areas as temperature remain above freezing. While interesting now with coatings to as much as 2 inches now down in central parts of LA, MS and AL, as temperatures drop through late afternoon and especially after dark, ice will become a significant concern long the northeast Gulf Coast and South Atlantic coast with snow perhaps making it close to the coast, especially in the Carolinas.
Here’s a look at the current radar.
Close up view of the growing snow band!
Here’s the current temperatures across the Southeast. Quite the contrast between northern MS, AL and South Florida.
With a strong push of arctic air comes DRY air.. check this out!
Projected snow totals off the GFS through 36 hrs. Heaviest snows focus on Carolinas tonight where 6-12 inches is possible.
Of course we have a significant ICE threat as warmer air sits over coastal areas from Savannah up to Charleston, Myrtle Beach, perhaps Wilmington.
Here’s the amount of liquid expected. Over an inch of liquid precip falling into 28-32 degree air will be a MAJOR problem.
Here’s a look at some of the WeatherBug cameras across the Southeast this afternoon.
This was the scene this afternoon in Leesville, Louisiana. What’s most interesting about this particular WeatherBug camera is that this was the same scene less than 5 days ago here. Rare if not unprecedented to see two accumulating snow events in west Louisiana inside a week.
Quitman, MS
Tough to see but here’s the current view overlooking Downtown Atlanta. Moderate snow and it’s accumulating fast!
Shall have an update later!
