It’s not only the coldest of the season right across the US but for many across the Rockies and Plains, today started off as the coldest low on record for the date. Across Montana, several communities saw their coldest temperature since 1996.
The coldest temperature within the Lower 48 this morning appears to have been Jordan, Mont with a low of -43 but many suffered their coldest lows since 1996 including Billings at -21, Great Falls at -33 and Havre at -39.
As you can see, it got down to low single digits all the way to Texas this morning. 3 for a tie of the record at Amarillo.

The ECMWF upper chart and 850 temps for today shows the intensity of cold sitting over Montana.
No wonder it was as cold this morning and there’s very little warming through this afternoon.
