First Heavy Snow For Central, Southern Europe, Cold Returning To UK

Written by on November 27, 2013 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 2 Comments

We have some very mild air in place at the moment across the UK with temperatures once again up into double figures in the North and yes, the South joined in on this milder air today but that mild air get pushed somewhat south of Scotland tomorrow. After a colder night tonight with frost in places, we only rise to 5 or 6C tomorrow and by Friday, much chillier air sweeps south aboard a strong northwest wind thanks to a deep Icelandic low.

Skipping back some, I want to show you the below satellite image across Europe and notice the snow cover over the Pyrenees and Alps thanks to bright sunny skies.

There’s been countless reports of snow across Germany and of course we’ve seen a good deal of snow across the Balkans also. Check out these beautiful shot captured from Bosnia.

You can see where the mild and cold air is over Europe today via the ECMWF chart below. Plenty of blue over central and southern Europe with the large upper low over Italy being the main snow producer.

As we progress through the weekend and we catch the much cooler northwest wind again, expect to see snow falling again over the hills and temperatures back into the 4-8C range widely.

By early next week the flow flattens but there’s a very sharp temperature contrast setting up between mild and bitterly cold air. That bitter cold running closer and closer top the UK is a hint hint hint…

Take a look at next Friday!

The cold is coming back to the UK as well as western mainland Europe later next week… Still think it may come and go again only to be followed by more 5-7 days later and it’s that which may hang around through Christmas..
