Rare 1050mb High To Bring Down January-like Air Mass Into US

Written by on November 20, 2013 in United States of America with 0 Comments

We have some truly mid-winter like air right now up over Alaska and the Yukon with readings in the -40s this morning. Even some 1-1,500 miles to the south, Calgary didn’t make it out of the 0’s today which show the extent of this arctic air mass. The core of that -40 air will dive into the heart of the United States late this week into the weekend via a 1048 to 1050mb high, very rare indeed. This will bring some January level cold.

Low pressure now forming over the Southern Plains will meet the cold drilling south and bring heavy snows to parts of Oklahoma, Texas up into Colorado where we’ll not only see heavy, troublesome snows but very impressive temperature drops. Just tonight, along the leading edge of this arctic pool, we saw Havre, MT drop from 52 to 19 in just 1 hour. That’s a sure sign of what’s ahead for a vast chunk of the country through the second half of this week.

The high covers a vast chunk of the country by 114 hrs. Some unusually cold days and nights to come by November standards with departures likely into -25-40 range.

If we get a storm winding up along or near the coast, there certainly would be enough cold air to bring snow and little rain. However, the NAO is going positive and this would suggest potentially more of an INLAND snowstorm. Too far out still but let’s keep an eye on this.
