BREAKING: Humberto Forms Just S of Cape Verde’s, Set To Become 1st Hurricane!

Written by on September 9, 2013 in Tropical with 0 Comments

It was inevitable! We now have Humberto positioned on the south side of the Cape Verde Islands bringing drenching rains and gusty winds. This storm looks primed for further intensification and is likely to become the Atlantic’s first hurricane of 2013.

Here’s the current rainbow satellite imagery.

As the Azores end of the mid-Atlantic ridge strengthens and a trough forms over the mid-Atlantic, so Hurricane Humberto-to-be should take a northerly turn over the next 72 hours, eventually weakening as it encounters cooler waters.

Here’s the GFS surface chart which shows strengthening into a decent tropical cyclone but as it heads north, it will weakening by late this week.

Interestingly if Humberto was to become a hurricane today, it would tie 3rd place, tomorrow 2nd place and Wednesday 1st place for latest Atlantic hurricane on record.

Also, according to Weather Nation, the last MAJOR hurricane or cat 3 of greater to strike the US was Wilma back in October 2005, some 2,874 days ago which is not only the longest period without a major hit in 150 years for the US but was more importantly the week I got married to my wonderful wife 🙂
