From Low 90s Today To 110s Friday In Las Vegas, Near 130° In Death Valley?

Written by on June 25, 2013 in United States of America with 0 Comments

By late June standards in Las Vegas, low 90s for a high could be considered cool but folks well know that this refreshing air ain’t going to last much longer. An unusually deep Western trough is allowing rare June ‘system’ rainfall into central California while temperatures are a good 3-6 degrees BELOW normal. While it’s cool here, it’s hot and humid further east with temperatures climbing into the low 90s today from DC up to New York.

Over the next 48 hours, hot, humid air will continue to sweat the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with nights holding well up into the 70s but a MAJOR pattern flip is brewing as a major ridge builds Out West while, in turn, a major trough develops downwind over the Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley.

Below is the ECMWF upper chart/850s for tomorrow (Tue) and you can see the western trough bringing those cooler surface temps while ridging, SW winds heat up the East.

What a turnaround.

The ridge really goes to town over the Desert Southwest with Vegas going from low 90s today to 110 by as early as Friday and the heat looks likely to keep on building through the weekend with many models suggesting 115 degrees by Sunday. Phoenix may get up towards 118.

Check out these Sunday afternoon temps according to the GFS.

Here’s Monday off the ECMWF

Check out the depth of the trough centred over the Midwest. This will promote daytime highs in the 60s and 70s for a few days and with very comfortable humidity levels, nights beneath clear skies could get rather chilly for the time of year. Perhaps widespread 50s with pockets of 40s in rural areas.

Finally, here are the forecasted 500mb heights off the ECMWF Friday through Sunday. Notice the trough deepening as the ridge lifts north.

Death Valley is likely to reach it’s first 120+ by Thursday and won’t go below that number till mid next week. It will surpass 125 probably 3-5 days with a few surpassing 127, perhaps taking a run at 130. It’s reached 129 twice in the past 8 years.
