Memorial Day Weekend Record Cold & Snow But 1st 90 For Philly, NYC Next Week?

Written by on May 24, 2013 in United States of America with 0 Comments

An impressive storm is now beginning to wind up over the Northeast and promises a miserable first half to the Memorial Day weekend. This afternoon has seen temperatures stuck in the 40s across a large part of Pennsylvania down into western Maryland and West Virginia, Snow was even reported over New York and Pennsylvania earlier.

Check out these afternoon temperatures across the Northeast. Boy that’s cool for May 24.

At 1pm, Central Park was stuck at 50 and even by late afternoon it remains at 52 with rain falling. Philly wasn’t much better at 53 and even as far south as Baltimore it’s only 57.

As for the snow threat, in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, perhaps extending down into Massachusetts, the GFS suggests a ridiculous amount of snow over the next 48 hours from this system. If we get even half of what it’s suggesting, it would be remarkable.

The model is suggesting much of Vermont gets blanketed by 6-12 inches of snow. Certainly this looks overdone in both coverage and depth, however areas above 2,500ft may see several inches.

Interestingly this comes on the heels of not only record cold here in Europe but snow too. The NAO has a near mirror image of the weather pattern on both sides of the pond.

Although not accumulating, snow flakes may fly as far south as western Maryland, West Virginia, perhaps North Carolina? over the next 48 hours.

The concern for a frost and even freeze will be both tomorrow night and Sunday night as the system heads out with clearing skies left in it’s wake.

While we’re likely to see record cold maximums fall today and tomorrow, the next couple of night’s are sure to break many records stretching from Michigan and New York all the way to Alabama, perhaps Georgia.

Once again, this is another MAJOR late season cold event and it just seems to go on and on this year doesn’t it. I may be wrong but the 25 expected over parts of Pennsylvania, possibly extending into West Virginia appears overdone with the lowest readings likely to be nearer 30.

Upper 20s could be enough to damage tree leaves as well as kill tender crops and plants, so be sure to take tender plants indoors or protect them if you live in this area.

As for next week, I have alluded to the fact that heat will once again rebuild over the Plains and by late in the week, expect the heat to be back into the Northeast.

Unfortunately next week’s pattern supports severe weather in the Plains.

A frontal boundary will set up early next week through the Ohio Valley as chilly air over the Northeast gets separated by increasingly hot air but eventually this boundary and the chill over the Northeast gets kicked east.

Below is the 850 temperatures from the next 24 hours.

So, while your cursing this chill now, hold on.. potentially the warmest air of the year so far may be looming late next week into the weekend. I am shooting for the first 90 in both Philly and New York. DC has of course already hit 90.
