Next Winter Storm On It’s Way To West, Northeast Snow Tempers Warming, Another Arctic Blast In 8-16 Day!

A strong jet tearing across the Pacific, like we’ve seen here in the UK, will once again alter the upper level pattern across the Lower 48 once again by late week, the next major winter storm will bring more big snows to the Intermountain West including Salt Lake City and Denver where it has been mild over the past week or so. Remember how cold it’s been in these areas during January. Winter returns here and there may be some impressive snow totals from this next storm.

Now, despite winter returning once again in the West, there are ranting and raving going on about the return of the eastern ridge, however!, remember that during the last two major warm-ups in the East there was literally no snow from Chicago to New York City, this time around there’s a good several inches to over a foot, this will really dent the warmth as it tries to come east but the exciting or most interesting thing is, the models have a system tracking out of the Ohio Valley to the Atlantic coast and bring FURTHER SNOW to the Ohio Valley and East, despite height rises.. hum, I think the warmth will stay in the Plains and push underneath the snowcover. Yes it will warm across the South and through the Carolinas, perhaps allowing 60s up into Virginia but from DC on north, the air doesn’t get out of the 40s.

Here’s the latest GFS snow chart from now through Sunday.

Check out the big snows for the mountains of Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. even across the central Plains there is a decent snowstorm coming from this on the northern edge of the ridge. This will most certainly be much flatter than the previous two and a lot of that is thanks to a much healthier snowpack.

Here’s the GFS temperature anomalies for the next 7 days, yes, this chart shows warming into the Northeast but this will likely be significantly tempered with yet more snow on the way right up till the close of the week.

Notice the core of warmth hangs back over the central and southern plains and spreads underneath the snowpack across the Ohio Valley and Northeast. As stated, there was NO snow on the ground across this region with the last warm-up and so the ridge and warmth spread right across allowing 60s to reach Boston. This time around i’ll be surprised to see Boston get out of the 30s.

Is this the arrival of spring with this warm-up? No.. In fact, there is a heck of a lot of arctic air ready to come back down yet again. Check this out. Minneapolis and even Chicago aren’t done with zero degree lows just yet!!

That’s yet another very impressive shot of arctic air on the way in the 8-16 day period and looking out from mid to late February, some long range models hint at the worst of winter still to come believe it or not!
