Dramatic Temperature Flip From Upper Midwest To Southeast Within 48 Hours!

Written by on January 30, 2013 in North and South America, United States of America with 0 Comments

The temperatures during the day today were simply amazing for this time of year with near 40 above normal readings to START the day over southern Iowa (pointed out by Joe Bastardi). Yes, it was in the low 60s to start the day and while readings rose during the daytime hours with 70s creeping into southern Indiana and Ohio, what’s coming in the 36 then 48 hour period is quite amazing. This certainly gets my blood pumping when you see these flip flips during winter in the Plains.

Now, keep in mind the temperatures of today.

Here are forecasted lows tonight. I’m in pretty good agreement with this. Note the 60 degree LOW in Cincinnati

Forecast highs off weather.com. Note the 70 in DC and 56 all the way to Boston. May see 60 in southern New England. Note the incredible 85 in Jacksonville. Low 80s may extend the length of the Carolina coastal plain but while it’s like summer here, take a look at the highs back behind the front. Just 39 in Chicago following 60s today, 16 in MSP and a brutal 12 below zero in Minot. This air (in a more modest form) is coming all the way to the heat zone of the Southeast corner by Friday and particularly Saturday!. Lows Thurs into Friday up in ND may get well into the -30s extending into N. Minn.

Here are the temp departures epected Friday. For the very areas which were comfortably 30 above normal today, they are now already back below freezing and may struggle to reach ‘normal’ today but by Friday, they’re 20 BELOW NORMAL or colder!

Keep in mind how much of the Southeast was in the 70s, even low 80s today, possibly warmer tomorrow with temperatures a good 20-25 above normal and see that these very areas go to 10 below normal. Remember it can be harder for arctic air to get all the way into the Southeast. It easier to have it warmer than normal given it’s latitude etc.

In saying that, it can be tough to drive 30 above normal as far north as we saw today but you realise the intensity of the arctic air when you’ve got these dramatic shifts from 20 or 30 above to 10-20 below norm.

By 84 hours or Saturday, the Southeast is even colder!

Here are Friday’s highs off weather.com. Suddenly Atlanta STAYS in the mid-40s, low to upper 50s to around 60 just from Savannah up the coastal plain.
