BREAKING: TOPEKA, KANSAS HAS HIT 75 DEGREES THIS PM WHICH IS AN ALL-TIME JANUARY RECORD!

The pattern that’s now evolving across the US is one that always grabs my attention and even excites as a huge temperature imbalance sets up from West to East. A major ridge now pumping warmth up into areas that shouldn’t be warm at this time of year will last a mere day or two at best as a major shot of arctic air comes down. For example, mid, perhaps even upper 70s will get all the way to Kansas this afternoon and southern Missouri tomorrow, Ohio Wednesday. Chicago is shooting for an impressive 60 degrees Tuesday.

What’s helping this warmth get so far north is a powerful trough diving all the way into the Desert Southwest with the 540 line making it down to the Four Corners. These low heights keep Las Vegas in the 40s and Phoenix in the 50s this afternoon. The deeper the trough in the West, the more it pumps the ridge to the east. The ECMWF pushes the 564 line all the way to the Lower Great Lakes and with a strong, fully stacked southwest flow blowing all the way from Texas, this can drive 70-degree air all the way up through Kentucky, perhaps even reaching southern Ohio in a couple of days. Behind the front, temperatures are in the 30s with possible snow for some. For those of you who love this warmth, enjoy it as it takes no time for the cold to return, in fact, this may be the strongest push of arctic air yet for some Midwest cities. Parts of North Dakota and northern Minnesota may remain in the -20s for HIGHS on Thursday.

Wild 2-3 Day Temperature Swings

South & Midwest

The entire pattern is course is sliding eastbound and so if your living in Texas, Kansas, Illinois, look out! Amarillo for example you may go from low 70s today to barely 32 on Wednesday with snow flakes flying on a howlling wind. Kansas City will soar into the upper 70s today but after a stormy spell tomorrow which may bring severe weather to the area, highs don’t make it out of the 30s Wednesday.

St Louis climbs into the upper 60s today and low 70s tomorrow as the front approaches and SW winds pick up but after the cold front blow through with possible storms, highs drop Thursday, only reaching the low 30s.

The warm front will get north of Chicago and so enjoy a rare 60-degree high tomorrow as SW winds align perfectly. However, like points to the west and south, afternoon/evening storms are possible with the front. Temps may crash 30 degrees in 12 hours later with rain perhaps turning to snow by Wednesday AM. The high Wednesday may not get out of the low 30s and by Thursday, once the arctic air gets pulled in from the NW, highs may only reach the mid-teens with subzero windchills all day! ouch!

The warm front never makes it up to Minneapolis and your mildest day is probably today at around 35 degrees. Enjoy this above normal weather because it’s above to get mighty cold again. Highs tomorrow linger in the low 30s but by Wednesday it’s about 15 degrees colder. By Thursday it won’t get above 0.

The core of cold will drop across the international border Tuesday into Wednesday and so North Dakota warms into the upper 20s today, upper teens tomorrow but then crashes Tuesday night into Wednesday. Highs Wednesday don’t make it out of the teens below zero!

East

Temperatures remain stuck in the 30s today from Washington up to New York, 20s in Boston thanks to the NW flow but as the ridge heads east, so temperatures rise above normal. Tomorrow DC gets into the upper 50s, NYC upper 40s and Boston upper 30s, By Wednesday DC nears 70, NYC upper 50s, Boston upper 40s. A frontal boundary pushes through Thursday dropping highs back into the 40s and by Friday and Saturday, all cities may hold in the 20s with a biting wind.
