Warmth & Significant Snowmelt To Be Followed By Major Cold Over US (Includes Video!)

As you know, there is significant warming on the way to the Plains, Ohio Valley and East which will erase a lot of the snow covering the Lower Midwest and interior Northeast but the Upper Midwest and New England should hold on given the snow depth and this should keep temperatures cooler and mainly in the 40s. Where there is no snow, I expect 50s widely. Records may well tumble.

While this warmth will see 20 above normal, the West will remain cool although a more westerly flow will kick in briefly early next week but the trough will deepen again and by later next week, colder and colder air will dive into the Great Basin and Plains. As the trough digs, so the eastern ridge pumps and so the warmth gets projected north.

This warmth cannot last though as a ridge begins to build north into Alaska and as this happens, so the arctic air will get forced south right into the western trough. While heights fall sharply over the West, so they rise further east.

What will help spread out the building cold over the US will be what’s going on over Europe. The strong ridge over western Europe will get kicked west, northwest out into the North Atlantic and will eventually position itself over Greenland as the coldest air yet spreads west from Siberia.

Models are showing both the Alaskan and Greenland ridges joining. These stronger than normal heights overtop should force the mother lode of arctic air right into the US. This setup will also spread out the trough and so some very cold air should spread across country. The amount and severity of the cold coming south may be very noteworthy, perhaps worst in several years.

The type of warming seen across the pole is the kind that has produced some of the worst arctic outbreaks in the past, so the potential here is very significant.

For all you cold weather lovers out there. This should excite you!!
