Alaska/Arctic Canada Primed Air To Advance Into N. Plains, Eventually East Next 2 Weeks!

Written by on December 7, 2012 in North and South America, United States of America with 0 Comments

The next 2 weeks will see a dramatic turnaround across the US with the southward advance of extremely cold air. The step down transition kicks in this weekend with arctic air dropping into the Rockies and as we enter next week, a secondary, stronger lobe drops out of Canada. Look out as the trough deepens over the midsection. We could see a sizeable, problematic snowstorm stretch from North Texas up through Chicago and into the Ontario. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a long fetch of 3-6 inches, locally a foot. This will help build the snowpack across the Northern Tier and even down into the central Plains. Once this gets laid down, the arctic express won’t moderate nearly as much.

The arctic air will come south wave by wave.

It’s that brutal arctic air hovering over Alaska and Northern Canada right now? Well that is coming south, southeast next week and once this pattern starts to make that turn with a northwesterly flow, look out. Say bye bye to the mild and hello to a ‘blast from the past’, especially after last winter.

Ok, here’s the GFS temp anomaly for the next 8 days!

Now check it out from day 8 through 16!! Note the removal of warmth over the East.. The focus of arctic air will aim at the Midwest but with each wave, the arctic air will punch harder and push east after dropping south out of Canada so you folks in the East, look out as each push of arctic air will be colder than the last.. The snowcover will begin to grow, starting in the Interior, working east towards the Atlantic Seaboard. By the weekend before Christmas, the Big Cities could well be snowcovered..

Now check out the below 2-metre minimum temperatures for the following week, Wednesday 19th to be exact! Wow, notice the zero degree line covers North Dakota, Minnesota, western Wisconsin and even takes a run at Chicago. What if this run grows colder as we progress towards that time period?

That is what I believe may happen and while we may see lows next week of 15 to 30 below zero over North Dakota, possibly Minnesota next week, the motherlode of primed arctic air which was and is currently over Alaska and Northern Canada will continue to become displaced off to the south.

Yes, the FRIGID chart below  for the week after next looks brutal, what a difference a year makes right? Folks, let me tell you that the air coming down could drive 40 below zero air into the Northern Plains many will be out on the roads, fighting through the crowds to bye Christmas presents..
