Scotland

While snowfall to low levels didn’t materialise today as expected in western parts due to a deeper layer of mild air in the mid-levels and that milder air being too close to the ground for liquid precip to change over to snow before hitting the ground. Up over higher ground in the Highlands, Grampians and Southern Uplands, it was a different story. Rather than a cold rain, it was snow which dominated and brought travel headaches for some.

This all comes on the heels of a particularly chilly night in which most saw the lowest readings of the season. While my back garden here in Lennoxtown hit -7C (19F), it hit -9C (16F) at Eskdalemuir where they experienced heavy snow through today, up in Dalwhinnie it fell to -11C (12F) and the king of cold last night was Braemar which hit -13C (9F). As the front swept in, so temperature rose.

Tonight, showers clear out and the stars reappear, making way for another cold night and despite a NW wind which tends to mix the air and keep it milder, well it won’t tonight and factoring in lows of 0 to -3C widely, the wind may make it feel closer to -5 to -10C, even colder feeling over exposed higher ground. Where sheltered from the wind and with snow on the ground, lows head for -6C. Areas tucked away in snow covered Highland or Southern Upland Glens may see -7 to -8C.

Tomorrow will be drier and brighter and even a touch milder in the west where snow is absent, highs of 5 to 7C but feeling cold with the stiff NW breeze but where the snow lies in central and eastern parts, highs struggle to only 2 or 3C. Wind blowing over snowcovered ground will feel distinctly chilly.

England

Following a wet, windy cold and for some.. snowy day, tonight sees clearance with a legacy of heavy, blustery showers rattling in on a stiff northwesterly. These showers may mix with sleet or even snow through the overnight as the air cools but for the majority, these showers at low levels will be rain or sleet, however, there is an area around western East Anglia which may see snow for a time but this area of precip clears quickly. The main frontal system will push out into the North Sea tonight and despite the wind tonight, it’s another cold one with lows widely down to near freezing, a wind chill will be a noticable feature. Watch for ice on roads and pavements. Lows 2 to -3C, rural sheltered areas may see -6C.

Tomorrow is a drier, brighter day and even a touch milder with highs of 5-8C but factor in a wind and it feels cold still.

Wales

Followinga very wet and windy day with gales on the coast and over Snowdonia, the theme turns to blustery showers and temperatures near freezing tonight across the board. Factor in near 0C air with a stiff NW wind and the wind chill will be noticable.

Tomorrow will be a day of brighter skies with blustery showers. Slightly milder than today at 6 to 8C, feeling cooler though.

Northern Ireland

A largely dry and clear night in store but with a fresh NW wind, showers are likely with a wintry nature over the north and high ground. Lows tonight to near freezing, perhaps lower in sheltered areas.. Watch out for ice.

Tomorrow is a bright, breezy and cold feeling day with just an odd shower possible. Highs 4-7C, feeling colder in the wind.

Ireland

A cold night throughout Ireland with clear skies, a frosty and a breeze which will make it feel very chilly. An odd shower is possible and these could fall as sleet or snow over high ground. Lows tonight 1 to -3C.

Tomorrow is a bright, breezy and cold feeling day with a chance of an odd shower.
