Scotland

An area of rain and hill snow has been slowly working south through this afternoon and has now brought some cold, low level rain to the Central Belt. Enough warmth aloft is supporting rain despite surface temperatures around freezing. Through tonight, as the mid levels cool, the rain may turn to snow at lower levels for a time before skies clear out. As they do, wet ground will freeze over creating a significant ice risk and temps may take a sudden dip into the -3 to -6C range prior to sunrise. If there happens to be snowcover and skies clear, temperatures could go below -6C.

Saturday, like today should be a largely fine, dry and sunny day but staying cold with similar temps to today at between 0-4C. The breeze picks up from the north and so it may feel slightly colder than today. Always a chance of an snow shower, especially down the east coast.

Another cold one tomorrow night with a widespread frost. Lows -1 to -7C.

England

It’s another cold night to come with a widespread frost. Where skies remain clear through much of the night, temps may dip as low as -7C like they did this morning at Shap in Cumbria. A weak system bringing rain, sleet and snow over Scotland will spread south over the next 12 to 24 hours and this may present snow even to lower levels as the moisture runs into the sub-freezing air from Cumbria to Oxfordshire. The moisture will also create a significant ice risk. Parts of Cumbria, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and down the spine of the Pennines could see a covering of an inch or so by morning. A lot will depend upon temp at about 500-1000ft above the surface because while 2 metre temps are below freezing, warmer air riding over top of this cold, means rain and not snow.

Saturday will be a decent day for many, staying cold with highs of just 1-2C in parts of the north, nearer 4-5C in the south. Anywhere could see sleet, perhaps even snow.

Another cold, frosty and icy night to come Saturday into Sunday.

Wales

Another cold, frosty night to come following a chilly and mixed day with more cloud and even showers dotting the landscape.

Lows tonight dip to 2-3C in the west, held up by clouds, while they drop to -1 to -4C in eastern areas where clearer.

Tomorrow will be a dry and bright day with plenty of sunshine, highs 4-8C.

Tomorrow night will see cloud and eventually rain spread in from the west.

Northern Ireland

Tonight will be a mixed bag of clear spells and cloud with some showers working south. As these showers dampen a sub-freezing ground, ice becomes a risk. Lows 2 to -2C.

A bright and sunny day Saturday with temps of 4-6C.

Tomorrow night turns cloudy and eventually wet.
