General Synopsis

A frontal boundary drapped across the Southern half of the British Isles will have another wave of low pressure push along it through tonight bringing yet more heavy rain to the same areas which got soaked last night. The low and trough which has been so persistent over the past 5 days finally gets pushed east by a high pressure system which builds over the UK for the weekend.

England

WEATHER WARNING: HEAVY RAIN SPREADS ACROSS SOUTHERN ENGLAND THROUGH TONIGHT/SATURDAY AM BRINGING A RISK OF SURFACE FLOODING AND POOR DRIVING CONDITIONS!

After a wet night and morning, the rains eased off during today but their already making inroads back across the South of England with the next wave of energy pushing through. These rains will intensify through tonight with some blinding downpours embedded within the pulses which run the band. With the ground saturated, the puddles generated from last night go knowhere and likely expand in coverage with this next soaking.

This band covers the entire South from Cornwall to Kent and extends as far north of South Wales and perhaps up as far as Warwickshire across to Norfolk. Expect widespread surface flooding on roadways. Heavy, driving rains will make a tricky night if your out and about.

Elsewhere across England, say from Birmingham north, it should be a largely dry, uneventful autumn night with a mix of cloud and clear spells. Cool for most, always coolest where skies are clearer for longer. Most fell between 5-8C, closer to 10C beneath the rain band but in rural areas under clear skies, temps fall towards 2-3C.

Into Saturday and while the rain band clears down over the Channel, it shall be a very pleasant autumn day with highs of 13-16C under plenty of sun with winds remaining light.

Sunday looks to be a repeat but the nights in between pose a risk of widespread frost, even towns and cities may see patchy light frost with lows dipping towards 2-3C, for some a touch cooler. As well as a risk of frost, is dense fog, particularly for valleys and this should burn off once the sun returns by morning. Outwith the urban heat island and look for 0 to -2C with sheltered spots likely to push -3, maybe -4C. Shap, Cumbria, Topcliffe, Yorkshire and Benson, Oxfordshire could be the coldest spots with a run at -5C.

Wales

WEATHER WARNING: HEAVY RAINS SPREADS BACK INTO SOUTH AND EVENTUALLY MID WALES THROUGH TONIGHT, BE AWARE OF LOCAL FLOODING & POOR DRIVING CONDITIONS

After a fairly bright, dry and decent day across Wales, tonight will see rains spread back across the South and through the night this rain turns heavy and expands north into Mid Wales. Like last night, it’s southernmost counties including the cities of Swansea and Cardiff will see the heaviest rains with upwards of 1 to 1.5 inches expected, perhaps locally 2 inches in upslope areas. Watch out for local flooding and nasty surface water and spray. The North should stay dry with clear spells.

Tonight’s temps stay near 10C under the cloud/rain deck but north of this and it’s closer to 6-8C with clear spots dipping towards 3-4C.

Tomorrow will be a glorious day with a mix of sun and clouds but I am optimistic that for most it’s more sun than cloud. With light winds and sunshine, it should feel pleasant at 12-15C. Sunday is a repeat performance though the overnight in between looks to be coldest of the season so far. Widespread frost. 2-3C in towns, 0 to -3C elsewhere.

Scotland

Today was another decent day with most of the showers up over the North and West Highlands while elsewhere it’s been a mix of sun and clouds. It felt pleasant in the sun but was distinctly cool in the shade and in any breeze.

Tonight stay largely fine with scattered cloud. Where skies are clear, expect patchy frost. Showers will keep going along the Northwest coast and North Highlands. Central Highland locales such as Aviemore or Dalwhinnie may see -3C. It hit -4C up in Kinbrace, Sutherland this morning under clear skies.

Tomorrow and another nice day with perhaps more sun and less showers for the north. Temps warm to a comfortable 12-14C, made more comfortable but light winds.

Tomorrow night looks cold everwhere under widespread clear skies. I expect towns and cities to approach to hit 0C with even suburban areas of Glasgow and Edinburgh potentially dipping to -2 or -3C. Sheltered areas tucked within the Highlands and Southern Uplands may see lows hit -4 to -6C. Prime spots include Altnaharra, Aviemore, Braemar, Eskdalemuir.

Sunday will be another pleasant autumn day with plenty of sunshine.

Northern Ireland

The theme across Northern Ireland is much the same as across the UK with a pleasant end to the day and a fairly quiet overnight with a mix of cloud and clear spells. Where skies remain clear, there’s always a risk of a touch of frost.

Into Saturday is the should start of fine, dry and bright and this sets the scene for what will be a beautiful autumn day and weekend overall with only later in the day of Sunday will clouds thicken and rain pushes up from the SW. Cold night in store Saturday into Sunday with a widespread frost. Lows dip towards 1-2C in the towns and cities, -1 to -3C in rural spots. The classic cold spot of Castlederg in Tyrone may push -4C.

Ireland

A pleasant end to Friday for most of Ireland though there will be rain pushing across the South tonight but this quickly clears in the morning to allow a day of bright, sunny spells with a low risk of showers. Same for the first part of Sunday following a cold and widespread frost but beyond lunchtime, a band of cloud and rain works up from the SW.

Highs range from 13-16C, lows 3 to -3C.

Frost risk significantly increases Saturday night into Sunday morning. (Mark Vogan)
