Major Amplification Next 2 Weeks Could Bring Record Cold To Europe, North America

There’s a heck of an early season cold period coming over the next 2 weeks for a large chunk of the US, east of the Rockies and for Europe, You’ve been warned!

Given it’s still only mid-September, the pattern evolving is one of great interest both the NAO and AO going into the tank. Models have been persistent on this with strong blocking in two areas 1) over Northwest Canada and the other over Greenland, consequent DEEP troughs will result over eastern North America, the other over western and northern Europe. The fact the AO (Arctic Oscillation) is going negative too means that early season arctic air is coming south into these troughs.

Major cold is coming off Greenland and will shiver Iclanders in winter-level cold this week coming.

It’s been tough already for Iceland after an unseasonable, brutal snowstorm at the start of last week. Check out this video of rescuers digging out sheep in Iceland following the snowstorm.

Record September Cold Looks Highly Possible For North America, Greenland & Europe Over The Next 16 Days

Iceland looks to see not only very cold nights in the coming 16 days but I believe some of the coldest September weather is ahead for these folks with single digit lows over the interior coming according to the GFS.

This isn’t entirely surprising given the direct the air is coming from and how cold the air’s expected to get over Greenland.

The Midwestern US gets darn chilly as we progress through the upcoming week and into next weekend, so too will the UK and Scandinavia. I believe record-breaking cold is on offer from Scandinavia to Britain as well as a large chunk of the eastern half of North America.

Check out the GFS 7 day global temperature anomaly. Note the northward surge of heat reaching all the way to arctic North America but the plunge of unseasonable cold into the US heartland as well as over Northwest and Northern Europe.

Check out the global minimum temperatures for the next 16 days. Note Iceland and Greenland with even here in the UK. Scraping your car following an overnight frost could become a common occurance over the next 2 weeks, starting as early as this week.
