Yes, on this day last year, we had an intense low sweep across Scotland packing 80-90 mph winds which caused damage, disruption. What’s significant about this system is that it was once once Hurricane Katia and this storm in particular I find is of particular interest because this is the name which replaced Katrina following the devastation caused back in 2005 on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
The above GFS surface chart shows the depth of this system as it clipped the North coast of Scotland on the afternoon on Monday, 12 September 2011. This would have been an iimpressive gale-centre even by winter standards but more so for a September storm. Winds were powerful and with trees still fully leaved, more were brought down.
As well as hurricane-force winds, heavy, horizonal rains hit and big waves were generated offshore causing disruption to ferry services around the country. Rail transport was disrupted too.
