For several days now the ECMWF, GFS and other models have been persistent in jumping on the idea of a good spell of weather for pretty much all of the UK from Wednesday onwards. Even over Northern Ireland and across to Scotland where we naturally have fronts swinging through or nearby enough to provide cloudy, cool and showery days. The past 7-10 days has seen a very active westerly flow which has been hurling one strong low after another across the Northern half of the UK with trailing fronts swinging heavy showers and strong winds down across the South too. The jet is now showing signs of a northward shift for a period of at least a week.

Southern Ireland & Britain could see best sustained period of warm, sunny weather in a long time

The South of Ireland and Britain will have a glorious and sustained 8-10 day spell of warmth and mostly sunny skies, bar one or two spells of perhaps increased cloud, perhaps an odd shower but that would be thanks to fronts swinging through across the North.

Starting tomorrow, highs rise to 25C in London, perhaps even 26C in Kent or East Anglia and really right through this week highs will rise into the low 20s from Birmingham south to Kent with partly to mostly sunny skies.

Next weekend shows UK-wide sunshine and warmth with highs possibly getting into the ‘high 20s’ for the South while low, perhaps mid-20s all the way up to Carlisle, even southern Scotland. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a mid-20C reading over the sheltered central Highlands or northeast of Scotland next weekend.

Even looking further out towards day 8 to 10, so that’s a week on Monday, Tuesday and high pressure lingers, with greater chance of continued warmth and mostly sunny skies in the South. Warm southwest winds will keep things above average for the next 10 days in the south with a spell of above average from Wednesday through perhaps next weekend in more northern areas!

In saying all this, for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Northern England, be aware of some rather wet and windy weather starting later Monday, Monday night and through Tuesday. A storm system which departed Newfoundland yesterday is heading for Iceland but it’s fronts will sweep across the Northern UK. Southern areas should see only some increased cloud and perhaps a few showers but once this thing clears, a big ridge will build in for all of us Wednesday onwards.

Here’s a look at the latest run of the ECMWF. Check out the persistent ridge.
