Following a wet and very showery day for many yesterday., today was much better with less wind in the south and less showers thanks to a small bubble of high pressure which seperates the lows. While yesterday low pushes across the North Sea towards southern Scandi, another low which is much stronger will spread our next batch of unsettled weather in.

If you live in Northern Ireland and Ireland, you already have spread south to southwest winds which may touch gale force in places and it will turn very wet for a time. A few hours tonight will be very wet and windy, appearing almost like a winter’s night as rain and wind batters off your south and west facing windows.

Above is the GFS precip forecast. Notice the well organised band of rain which sweeps slowly west to east across Ireland and the western UK, eventually reaching eastern and southeastern areas tomorrow. Expect some of this rain to be heavy and persistent for perhaps 1-3 hours before clearing with showers likely to follow.

Notice in the below pressure chart also off the GFS, the isobars tightly packed as the centre of circulation nears. Pressure is expected to drop towards 976mb and thankfully this centre doesn’t ever cross the UK or Ireland but merely sideswipes. It’s cold front does cross and thar is what brings us the band of heavy rain and strong winds.

Most across Ireland and western Britain should see sustained winds at 15-25mph and gusts 25-40mph. Some exposed south and west facing coasts as well as higher ground may see gusts to 50 or 60 mph.

Tuesday will be drier but plenty of showers, especially over Northern Ireland and Scotland will keep it dissapointing. Winds will still be blustery but not as strong as tonight and tomorrow.
