Multiple June, Even All-Time Records Fall Across Rockies & Plains In Impressive June Heatwave

The intensity of the upper ridge over the Rockies and Plains in the last 4 or 5 days has been mighty impressive. The ECMWF had this heat wave on the table since the start of last week and by looking at this model day after day, I knew we could see some impressive numbers and records fall, just look at the map above (courtesy of The Weather Channel) and check out the vast area 110+F temps cover..

Last Tuesday I wrote on facebook that I could see 110F as far north as eastern Montana and the western Dakotas. Miles City, Montana topped 111F yesterday which in fact was an all-time high here. McCook, Nebraska also recorded an new all-time record with a Death Valley-like 115F, this was also a national high.

While there were countless all-time June records set across Kansas up into Nebraska, we saw Denver tie their all-time record high for a second straight day, this has never happened before. As for Texas the city of Houston topped a scorching 105F, this was a tie for the hottest June reading on record and only 4 off the all-time record.

Not only is the actual highs impressive but so too is the heat’s duration as Denver end’s it’s 100 streak with 4 consecutive 100s.

Chicago, St Louis, Detroit, Cincinnati, Washington, Atlanta All Next For 100F

The hot dome slides into the Midwest and Ohio Valley Thursday allowing temperatures to reach 100F in Chicago for the first time since July 2005. Chicago has’nt recorded a 100F reading since 1999 so it will be interesting to monitor their temperature tomorrow but with strong southwest winds and the intensity of heat to the southwest, I think it’s highly likely temperatures get to between 100-104F.

Further south we may see such cities as St Louis heat to as much as 103-106F from Kansas City to St Louis to Cincinnati. While we see upper 90s return to DC and around 90 in New York, by Friday we should see 100F in DC while New York could see 95, Boston 93.
