Between Thursday and this morning, there are parts of southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle which has seen an astonishing amount of rainfall. While some places have witnessed 15-22 inch 2-day totals, some spots have witnessed 12-18 inch ONE-DAY totals. These are amounts you would expect from a tropical storm or hurricane but of course this wasn’t a hurricane or tropical storm which produced this but simply a stalled front associated with an upper low.

This upper level energy drew up deep tropical moisture from off the warm, juicy Gulf where water temperatures near to the coast are into the mid and upper 80s. Cold air asscoaited with the upper low brought the much needed ingredient to bring the 2-3 inch per hour rainfall rates.

This was the perfect setup for epic floods as the upper low, the cold air, the position just north of a tropical water basin which supports upper 80-degree waters and the fact this was stalled allowed for the incredible totals.
