For those living in the eastern third of the country, this weekend is all about the return of heat following a chilly past week. In a sense, one can thank the latest storm system punching into the Pacific Northwest as this is helping push and expand the ridge east. As this system carves out a new trough southeastwards into the central Rockies, so the heat over the Dseerts gets lifted up and around the trough. Expect mid-90s across parts of the Northern Plains while low 90s return to Chicago tomorrow afternoon. By Sunday afternoon we see possibly mid-90s across Minneapolis while another day of 90s looks set for Chicago into Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh across to the Washington-Philadelphia corridor.

For those in New York City up to Boston and throughout New England, it looks like you guys remain below 90 thanks to the northward migration of the high towards James Bay, this ridge position keeps NYC on the eastern edge of the high and this is an area often exposed to backdoor fronts. It’s only if the ridge was to spread further east would a west, southwest wind and heights be strong enough to support over Manhattan.

As for the source region of this heat, the deserts.. the trough pushing through Washington and Oregon looks to drop far enough south as well as east to push the core of heat out of Southeast California and Arizona over the weekend and into Texas. While tomorrow may be hot across Texas, it’s Sunday where much of western Texas will be in the 102-107 degree range.

SEVERE WEATHER

As for the severe risk over the weekend, storminess continues along a stationary boundary drapped along the Gulf Coast. This has been responsible for producing plentiful rains and some locally strong thunderstorms. These will continue through the weekend with each afternoon activating this front as daytime heating bubbles up the atmosphere.

The greater area of concern will be on the northern rim of the ridge right up near to the international border where chillier air exists and sets a thermal contrast zone.  Severe thunderstorms are likely to fire around this ‘ring of fire’. The northern Rockies may also get in on fun and games with the upper level energy coming through.

From about midweek (Wednesday) onwards towards next weekend, heights will begin lowering once again over the East with a trough re establishing, the recurving western Pacific typhoon theory looks to win out but what’s interesting with this is that with an area of disturbaed weather down over the southern Gulf where it meets the Caribbean Sea lingering and pressures lower within the region, we must watch for Gulf action towards next weekend.

More tomorrow, good night!
