Temperatures Soar To 37°C (100°F) Over Southern Spain While UK Gets Split Between Cold Continental & Warm Sub-Tropical Air
While temps struggle to between 4-7C across a rain-drenched Scotland and Northern England with as much as 48.2mm of rain now fallen since midnight at Shap, Cumbria thanks to a raw, cold continental northeasterly flow off Scandinavia, this is in stark contrast to a warm Central and Southern England and Wales as warm subtropical southwesterly winds blow warm air up from France and Iberia where true heat is being forced north from Morocco and Algeria, sending temps to 37C or 100F this afternoon across southern Spain. It even warmed to 21.1C this afternoon at Norwich Airport, Norfolk, warmest UK reading in 6 WEEKS would you believe.
To summarise the past 24 hours, we’ve seen the northward transfer of a massive canopy of heavy rains which cleared a large swath of southern and central England by midmorning with hefty showers following.
While truely hot air flowed across the Gibraltar strait into southern Spain, the low over the UK seperated two very distinct air masses thanks to the counterclockwise circulation. Points north and east of the storm centre experienced cold, raw NE winds which supported snows over the Cairngorms, while points south of centre was able to get into a warm southwesterly flow. Winds blew off France where temps warmed to 28C this afternoon in Paris. They were helped by SW winds blowing northeast from southern Iberia where it turned very hot this afternoon. All in all, southern England found themselves downwind of this toasty air flow with 16 to 20C temps found widely all the way up to South Yorkshire. It has also felt rather humid too.
