Though It Is May, Winter Fights To Hold On After Little Impact During Winter Months Here In UK

MAY SNOW: This picture was taken this morning on the A826 between aberfeldy & crieff (Courtesy of Hugh Lawson)

Over the past few days we have seen some pretty cold weather for so late in the season. Blame a cold trough sitting over the UK and Ireland, drawing in arctic. Overnight frosts, temps down to -6.2C (20F) and even snow have brought the return of scrapers, heavy jackets and surprise. People are scratching their heads as to what time of year is it. While it was sleeting this afternoon here in Lennoxtown, the photos above and below were taken this morning along the A826 between Aberfeldy & Crieff in Perthshire. I saw a tweet report of snow apparently falling in Edinburgh today while even northern parts of England have seen some snow.

My truck dashboard temp yesterday morning read -5 in Lesmahagow while as I drove down the M74 and into the frosty hollows tucked within the Southern Uplands, the reading was -6C (21F), the SECOND LOWEST reading all year, that is pretty amazing when you think about it. The lowest incidentally was -7C.

I also noticed moisture which was dripping out of the door of my truck freezing too.

While pretty rare to see this level of chill in May, I recall back to 2 years ago when there was light dustings of snow on the Campsie Fells here north of my house and well below freezing nights, accompanied by frost in May.

Another Unsettled Week Of Weather For UK & Ireland

TURNING WET AND WINDY FOR BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY

After another cold and frosty night for parts of the UK, a new weather system will arrive during Monday bringing wind and rain into Ireland and the UK. This system should clear northwards bringing drying later into the day. Temps will remain subpar at 6-10C in Scotland, Northern Ireland and North of England, feeling raw in the stiff easterly wind. It’s a milder 13-16C from the Midlands to South Coast as well as much of Ireland.

During Tuesday, a front works wet weather into the South of England while further north, wind and rain lingers over the Highlands while there is a dry slot from the Central Belt down through the Midlands, highs turn milder even over Scotland with 14, 16C in South.

By Wednesday another, stronger Atlantic low swings into southern and central areas bringing very wet and windy conditions with further flooding possible over areas that have recently got hit hard.

Scotland’s far south should get in on this rain while central and northern areas should stay dry and fairly bright. Temps around 10C in Glasgow, closer to 7C in Aberdeen. Further south, with a strong push of Atlantic air, temps from Manchester south should warm into the 14-16C range but wind and rain will make it less pleasant.

As for Thursday and Friday, the system slowly clears from Ireland and and UK but wet weather lingers over the South. High pressure builds into central and northern areas and temps should respond accordingly with 14 or 15C in Scotland, Central areas of England may reach 16C.
