Deep Low Spreads Heavy Rain Bands, Strong Winds Across UK, Ireland
A wild sub-973mb Atlantic low is making it’s presence felt throughout much of the UK today with a large swath of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms circling the low.
The northward moving lead rain band where the most persistent and heavy rain is will be slow moving this afternoon over the Midlands up through the North of England and Wales with gusty winds adding to the misery while further south, while this canopy of rain pushed through Southern England early today, energetic bands are spinning off the low and bringing cells of heavy rain, thunder and lightning and hail along with wind gusts to 40-50 mph.
Areas across Southwest England, particularly the moors as well as the Chilterns, Downs and the eastern slopes of the Pennines where moist winds will pile in will likely bring upwards of 1.50 to 2 inches of rain, accompanied by easterly gales.
Tonight and into tomorrow sees the low trek northeastwards into Central England and this transfers the wettest, windiest weather up across Cumbria, Northumberland up across Scotland while winds turn lighter and showers ease in intensity and frequency.
Expect heaviest rains tomorrow over eastern Scotland accompanied by gales with near gale-force winds throughout the Central Belt, especially around Edinburgh.
Blowtorch Setting Up From Balearics To Russia Next 5 Days
As for the rest of Europe, the trough orients northeast to southwest from off Norway, through the UK and Ireland, this will continue extending it’s arm all the way down into the sub-tropical Azores region where normal high pressure is dominant by this time of year, that’s why the high is known in this region as the ‘Azores High’ funnily enough. So, by driving this cool trough and bringing cooler, unsettled conditions down here, this naturally forces a reaction in the atmosphere. Given the orientation of the axis, the pumps a ridge, just as strong and as far reaching into the north, northeast and the trough is south, southwest to bring Algerian heat across the western and central Med basin northeastwards into central and eastern Europe.
By Friday and through the weekend, I expect 30C in parts of Germany and this may well get across Poland, teasing Russia with near 30C, outstanding warmth for so early and although I don’t have figures, this, if happens has got to be all-time record setting warmth. I believe both Berlin and Warsaw will eye 28-30C while Moscow Saturday or Sunday (maybe both days) could top 27C.
