Scotland Sets New March Heat Record With 22.8°C (73°F) Recorded At Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire

Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, Altnaharra, Highland, Drumnadrochit, Inverness-shire all beat previous warmest March days by at least 2C (BBC).

Fyvie Castle   22.8C (73F)
Kinlochewe    22.1C (71F)
Aboyne           21.7C (71F)
Altnaharra      21.6C (70F)
Aviemore       20.4C (68F)
Lossiemouth  20.2C (68F)
Strathallan     19.6C (67F)
Glasgow        19.5C (67F)

First of all we missed the warmest Christmas Day on record by less than 1C, then it was February where we missed a national record high by 1C but thanks to the persistency in that dominant upper level ridge which continued to bring us warmer-than-normal conditions ended up bringing us a record warm day. Up until today, the record for March in Scotland was a balmy 22.2C (72F) set back in 1957 at Gordan Castle, Moray. Today we saw a temperature top out at 22.8C (73F) at Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire.

All across Scotland, thanks to a strong upper level ridge of high pressure and near nation-wide sunshine, temperatures widely rose to between 5-10C above the seasonal normal. North, south, east and west, temperatures soared into the 16-20C with a pocket of 21-22C readings stretched from just south of Inverness to Aberdeen, on the north flank of the Central Highlands. This stunning weather more typical of mid-summer drew Scots to the beaches, parks and back gardens. No doubt there will be many BBQ’s crackling this evening, a rarity, even unheard of during the month of March. Back last April, the entire UK as well as many other parts of western Europe enjoyed summer-like warmth, I thought April was remarkably early for such warmth, then came this year and March seems to be the month when summer came early, way early!

Significant Cooldown Following All-Time Record Heat Across Northeast

While lows dip into the 20s throughout the Big Cities of the Northeast with wind chills in the teens, 10s and even 10s is possible through New England Monday night into Tues morning with wind chills well below zero. This will not only be a major shock to the system but a potential killer to those tender planets which have popped out way too early due to last weeks all-time record warmth!
