Temperatures Soar Across The UK While Stormy Seas Cause Problems Over Med And S. Europe

Some 3pm readings courtesy of the Met Office

Dishforth 17.8C
Fylingdales 17.6C
Topcliffe 17.4C
Nottingham Watnall 17.3C

A few hours ago, both Aboyne and Aberdeen were leading the list with 17.7 and 17.8C respectively but both have cooled back to 15C now.

You couldn’t ask for nicer spring weather across much of Ireland and the UK with sunshine filtering through in many areas. Where that sun has been beaming down, those temps have really shot up, I’m seeing plenty of 16 and 17C readings as I write this at 3.50pm, quite incredible for this early stage in the year still.

It’s all courtesy of a high, stronger than normal and centred to the southwest of the UK mainland, this position allows strong southwesterly air to flow up across the region from the sub-tropical Azores region. Winds of a southwest direction stacked vertically brings maximum warmth north, northeastwards over the UK and helped increase the warmth further, we have some downsloping off hills. The hills also act like a barrier, stopping thick, maritime cloudcover from pushing into eastern areas, but even at that, pressure heights are strong enough for clouds to erode through the day as the surface heats up.

The upcoming week looks to see warmth continue, particularly from the Midlands on southwards. Heights lower up over Scotland and eventually Ireland but Tuesday and Wednesday may produce the warmest weather yet to parts of England where a 20, even 21C reading is possible. By Thursday, the strong ridge will start to work south and bring glorious spring weather and warm temperatures to France and Spain while further east, the cold while eases early this week, will see a return to a very cold, arctic air they have gotten so use to this winter.

The unsettled weather over the Med looks to continue with low pressure remaining divorced from the main jet stream.
Next weekend continues to show the dissapearance of the ridge completely from the UK and a reality check looks likely as a trough returns bringing in much cooler, more seasonal air.
WHY HAS IT BEEN SUCH A LATE WINTER?

Personally, I put a lot down to the drought across many areas of south, and eastern England, this can help support stronger than normal high pressure and it also supports warmer temperatures as dry soils, dry the lower atmosphere above it and the drier the air, the quicker and warmer it can get.
