Wet & Windy Night Across UK Tonight, Turning Winter-like Across Scotland Tomorrow

Tonight sees the arrival of the cold front which has brought a rather wet and windy day across Ireland and Northern Ireland and is set to sweep down across the UK over the next 12-18 hours.

Along this front will be a period of heavy rain and strong to possibly gale-force south, southwest winds. I expect a period where you’ll hear the rain battering off your south/west facing windows.

Winds will pick up through early tonight as the rains press east, southeastwards across Scotland and through the early hours of Wednesday the front should be sweeping down across England and Wales, likely easing it’s rain band as it pushes into the South of England.

WINDS VEER WESTERLY BY WEDNESDAY, CHANGING PRECIP TO SNOW OVER SCOTTISH HILLS, MAYBE EVEN TO LOW LEVELS

By dawn tomorrow, those rains will have turned more showery across Scotland and winds will have likely swung to a more direct westerly direction rather than southwest, this means, colder air will push in bringing a wind chill and yes, precipitation which falls will begin to turn wintry.

The closer together and greater the contrast between warm and cold, the stronger the jet stream blows. It is generally travelling at the 30-40,000ft level, cruising altitude of aircraft. READ MORE!
