Cold Front Swings South Over Scotland Bringing Arctic Air, Cold Winds And Snow Showers

The much anticipated cold front swept through during the overnight and morning following some intense overnight rains and gale-force winds.

Once the front pushed through, the air grew colder but it was really as today wore on and the general flow began to make that turn from a mild southwesterly direction to west, northwesterly direction that the air began to support those rather lively snow showers which impacted areas even on the coast and down at sea level. I encountered snowcovered roads for a short time late this morning as I drove northbound up the A77 coastal route between Ballantrae and Girvan, Ayrshire. Once I returned to Glasgow sleet fell before hail mixed with snow hammered by truck at the depot. By the time I got home, it was pure snow falling. So, this showed the depth of cold air growing as this afternoon wore on.

Very heavy bursts of rain, strong winds has now spread down through England and is now impacting the South. The air will steadily grow colder, even across Scotland still despite the front long gone to the south. Why, well the northwesterly upper flow is now drawing Greenland-Iceland origin air southeastwards and this will become more established tonight into tomorrow as the UK recieves more of this cold air from Greenland.

This is why I believe tomorrow will be the coldest of this short arctic blast and the current European model supports this. Highs tomorrow may have a tough time getting above 1C in many inland areas of Scotland and the north of England while highs barely reach 4-6C in the south.

Amazingly, once we reach Monday, heights are already rising back across the UK as the trough, which brought us this cold, will be over the near continent. By Tuesday into Wednesday, the Azores high is back and next week looks almost WARM! Certainly could see 16C in parts of the UK later next week!

LONG RANGE, HEADS UP

The current cold blast is short lived. Arrived this morning and will be pushing out by Monday only to be replaced by Azores high pressure once again, only this time it looks to bring potentially the warmest air since autumn to parts of UK with highs of 16C (UK Feb record is 19.1C)! However, winter is far from over. Another blast of cold I expect to see by late month!

As the below upper level charts off the ECMWF show, the pattern is back to a much more fluid setup, free flowing and at this late stage in year, wild weather and wild temperature swings can occur. I expect some wild conditions over the next month as building warmth starts to work north will resistent cold tries to fight on and hold ground. We will see spells of unusual warmth and cold in the coming weeks. Winter won’t let go easily this year.

Tomorrow’s upper map shows the shot of arctic air over the Northern UK.

Next Friday’s upper pattern shows Azores high pressure pumping unusual warmth across the UK
