While Europe Warms, Impacts From Coldwave Will Linger For Weeks, Perhaps Months To Come
A big freeze continues to grip eastern and central Europe and this image of Italy blanketed in snow was captured by Envisat’s Meris satellite on 13 February 2012.
Heavy snow has damaged some structures across the country, including the medieval walled town of Urbino and the ancient Colosseum in Rome. Fragments have fallen from the Roman amphitheatre and it remains closed to tourists. (Image from BBC)

Warming following Weeks of Cold and Significant Snowfall Leads To Flooding Concerns!
While the continent warms following a cold wave which will likely go down in the books as one of the worst in decades will not only go out with a slick, icy legacy but I fear a much more worrying outcome to the warming looms. Given the shear amounts of snow which has fallen, a significant flooding event may be looming, particularly from central and northern Italy east, northeastwards through the Balkans and across Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and into Russia where we have seen a massive amount of snow. I believe it’s possible that in areas of Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania and even parts of Italy we could be looking at a one-in-fifty-year flood with areas suffering catastrophic flash floods caused by warming and rapid snowmelt. Communities tucked into the mountains with rivers nearby and 5-10 feet of snow remains piled up are most vunerable.

To add to these not so wintry conditions will be mild air. Temps like we’re seeing today widely in the 8-11C with some 12s showing up will continue. Yes, it’s a somewhat boring pattern, we’re back in limboland as we watch the advance of a trough which should sweep in later Saturday into Sunday kicking the high south and east. READ MORE…
