European Cold Wave Continues Deepening, Kills At Least 45 People

Following a major 1-2 foot blizzard, all but crippling many communities across Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia we have now seen the arrival of fierce and deadly cold pull in directly from Siberia and Kazakhstan where temps in the capital, Astana read a bonechilling -40C/F this morning, Striong east winds blowing around a half a hemisphere-sized Arctic high is transporting super cold air into Europe.

At Sjenica, Serbia, the low this morning plunged to -29C (-20F), Rovno, Ukraine -28C (-19F), Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine -28C (-18F)

Coldest Nights of Winter For UK Wednesday and Thursday Nights

Temps widely fall to between -5 and -10C. Thursday will likely be the UK’s coldest day with highs possibly struggling to freezing point from Inverness to Birmingham.

While the coldest air will be overhead by tomorrow and into Thursday, with near UK-wide clear skies and light winds, temperatures will plummet to the coldest levels of the season so far. I’m expecting lows to widely fall to between -5 and -10C with the odd cold hollow anywhere from the North-Central Highlands to Shap, Cumbria to Benson, Oxfordshire where a -12 to -14C wouldn’t surprise me. One major factor however is missing in completing the MAXIMUM RADIATIONAL COOLING PROCESS and that will be the lack of snowcover and thus temps, though cold, won’t be down to what they may well have been had there been a widespread reflective blanket of snow..

Near Countinent Cities May Fall to -10C!

Such cities as Copenhagen, while may fall towards -15C in coming nights, we may see lows drop below -10C in both Amsterdam and Brussels, even down Paris. This weekend could also see the bitter cold covering the continent reach central Spain. Yes, even Madrid may dip to -10C or colder…

One Wild Ride – Alaska

This photo was taken during the first week of January after a major snowstorm hit Alaska with record snows. Twitter user shannynmoore tweeted, “In case you wonder what driving in 21 feet of snow looks like… more on the way.” She’s right. South Alaska is on tap for even more snow in February.
