While the trough over the coming days grows and pulls increasingly frigid cold air off Siberia and all the way down to near the Mediteranean coast, this will keep both the storminess going throughout southern Europe but may likely trigger more heavy snowfall over the mountains of northern Greece, through the Balkans and into Turkey and given what I’m seeing with the latest models, some surprise snowfall along the coastal resorts along the Med coast wouldn’t shock me in the coming days as the cold crosses the mountains and out over the sea.

As for the western continent, little real change as of yet as yet another Atlantic system pushes across Ireland and the UK bringing firstly mild air, wind and plenty of rain (esp in north) which will be followed by a colder northwesterly flow.

While Norway and Sweden are now under the cold blanket, any of this moisture will sharply turn to snow and so significant snows can be expected across any part of Scandinavia if this moist flow makes it thro0ugh the much drier, colder atmosphere over Scandinavia.

The low countries of Belgium, Netherlands remain in a similar pattern to the UK but further east into Germany, well their at the cross roads between cold continental air to the east and maritime air to the west. Off and on snow will impact Germany while it’s all snow and below freezing temps further east into Poland.

Expect more heavy snow for parts of the Alps.

Once we get through this weekend, well it appears that the current pool of cold will grow stronger and stronger and the temps above for tomorrow are likely to be warm compared to next week. I am concerned as to just how nasty next week may turn out to be when considering widespread potentially crippling snowstorms and extreme cold in which records may well tumble widely over eastern and central Europe.

What Supports Next Week’s Brutal Turn to Colder Across Europe?

The most recent stratospheric warming event which was strongest and over top of the pole, indicates for the first time, a proper flip to negative in both Arctic Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation. Ensemble model runs have been consistent with this flip and models are also now converging on the idea (also a first), that very cold air will build into Europe from Asia, filling Europe through next week.

Given the severity of this cold these current model runs are pointing to at this time, would suggest a major arctic outbreak Europe may not have seen in many years. Beating any cold seen last year or the year before. Western Russia looks really brutal when going by the most recent run of the ECMWF. My concern at this point in time is that the cold that may flood the continent, may be worse than the models are showing and that is a worrying thought for such cities as Moscow, Warsaw, Berlin and many others.

Check out the latest run off the ECMWF and Canadian off Policlimate.com where it shows this flip.
