THE GREAT FIGHTBACK OF OLD MAN WINTER MAY HAVE JUST BEGUN
KEY SIGNALS WHICH ALLOW MAJOR COLD WAVES
Arctic Oscillation & North Atlantic Oscillation both suggest the coming of cold to the USA and much of Europe. Both may be shivering by Jan 20.

The above chart shows the tanking of the AO which is the index which allows cold air to migrate southwards from the pole into the mid-latitides.
The above chart shows a tanking of the NAO into negative territory and this trends towards blocking over the north Atlantic, stopping the classic west to east flow of mild ocean across the USA as well as the UK, Ireland and much of Europe. The combo of a negative AO and NAO suggests increased chances of some very cold weather down the road for both North America and Europe.
The reason for these flips to negative from strongly positive is likely thanks to the development of a stratospheric warming event seen in the chart below. This shows warming high up in the atmosphere which splits the polar vortex and allows pools of warmth to push up into the polar region and ultimately the southward migration of this Arctic air.
