First true restbite from stormy pattern looms next week for UK-Ireland and Scandinavia

The very stormy weather which hammered Ireland, the British Isles and Low Countries over recent days has been drawn southeast along a strong northwesterly jet bringing yet more heavy, snowblown snow to the Alps as the system and front pushed through. This storm as it crossed the Alps tapped the warmer air and moisture off the Mediterannean and intensified bringing very stormy conditions and even triggered avalanches in the Swiss Alps and strong, damaging winds, heavy rains and mountains snows across Italy and the Balkans. Over the next 24 hours this very windy weather will push eastwards impacting the eastern Med and will greatly impact Turkey this weekend.

High Pressure builds into Western Europe

After a showery day Saturday in north, less so in south and a wetter, windier day on Sunday over the northern UK, models suggest a large change in Europe’s weather pattern next week with the building of high pressure and northward retreat of the jet stream which would allow mild air to flood much of western Europe as well as divert the storm track bringing much welcomed settled conditions. This is a significant change from what has been a very stormy pattern which has been nonstop since the start of December or certainly that’s when the storms turned very frequent and intense.
