Scotland Gets Battered Once Again By Atlantic

BREAKING: GLASGOW RECENTLY RECORDED A WIND GUST OF 74 MPH (1 MPH SHY OF HURRICANE-FORCE), STRONGEST GUST FROM ANY OTHER SYSTEM THIS SEASON.

The wild Atlantic driven pattern continues with the latest Atlantic system battering Northern Ireland, Scotland and the north of England today bringing winds in excess of 80 mph to exposed areas causing disruption and damage in places including Fir Park in Motherwell where a football match has been cancelled in fear of supporter safety due to damage to the stadium..

The shear frequency combined with intensity of these lows is remarkable. In my opinion it’s nothing we’ve seen in quite some time. It reminds me of the turbulent but warmer decade of the 1990s back during my school days when we seemed to endure a spate of wild Atlantic storms. This is also in stark contrast to the last two winters where after very wet autumns and a few storm systems which brought high wind, conditions where largely calm, settled and cold while this season the pattern is extremely energetic with a powerful jet racing across Ireland, the UK into Scandinavia and along that jet is an endless train of storms.

The large temperature profile between Greenland and the Azores in my opinion is a large contributor to the vast energy being injected into the jet and with a strong positive NAO/AO, the jet continues to track west to east over the mid-latitudes into NW Europe with storms coming ashore every 2-3 days.
