Heavy snow blankets Moscow, Russia while unseasonable warmth spreads across UK

Altnaharra, Sutherland (far northern Scotland) saw 12C today, on this day a year ago, the temp hit -16C! What a difference a year makes…

The ridge of high pressure pumping northwards from the Azores up into the UK and Ireland is not only bringing unseasonably mild weather throughout western Europe but it’s also deepening the trough to the east across Germany, Poland into Russia and this trough also opens the door to cold air surging southwards. The strong cold front which dove south through Russia, Ukraine into the Black Sea and Turkey produced Moscow’s first significant snowstorm.

The temperature spread has become large across the continent over recent days thanks to this recent buckling of the jet. While folks here across the UK and Ireland enjoy 11 to 14C highs, from Poland eastwards, highs are remaining below freezing with a wind making it feel a lot colder.

While it’s warm in the west, cold in the east, a significant storm system is bringing very wet, windy conditions across the central Med Sea and this is impacting Italy and Greece eastwards into Turkey. This system has embedded thunderstorms firing along that bounadry between mild air flowing up from Africa, the warmth off the Med below and the cold piling south. These factors coming together creates the perfect recipe for a significant system.

THE WEATHER NETWORK

Britain and Parts of Ireland have been spoiled the past two Christmases with lots of snow on the ground but what happened this year?

In my opinion, we have been spoiled the past two straight Christmases across much of the UK with lots of snow on the ground, however this in itself was rare as snow on any given Christmas is rare anyway. Why such a large difference this year to the past two.. No blocking and a strongly Atlantic driven setup.
