Wild Week of Weather: Hurricane-force winds, torrential rains, heavy snow, blizzards and cold is/will impact the UK & Ireland throughout this week
WEATHER WARNING!
Strong Winds: 70-80mph wind gusts are expected tonight over the north of N. Ireland and Southern Scotland as well as possibly Cumbria
Blizzards: Blizzards expected tonight at or above 100 metres over Southern Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland
BREAKING: A wave of 66 foot (20.4 metres) was recorded off Donegal, Ireland (highest in Irish waters according to BBC)
We have seen winds increase throughout today across many areas of Ireland, N. Ireland and the UK and along with those increasing winds, heavy rain has also caused problems with last night seeing upwards of 2+ inches of rain in Glasgow.
70-80 mph winds
Tonight looks to be particularly nasty as gales affect many areas with a core of 70-80 mph winds expected to funnel out of the west across the north coast of Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland and possibly northern Cumbria. We’ve already seen wind gusts as high as 86 mph at Glen Ogle in Perthshire, 72 mph at Port Ellen on Islay and Macrihanish on Kintyre, 71 mph at Prestwick, Ayrshire and it’s likely these winds will continue howlling throughout the night.
Blizzard conditions
Accompanying those strong winds will be heavy snowfall above 100 metres over much of Northern Ireland, central and southern Scotland down into the North of England. Exposed routes could have extremely dangerous driving conditions tonight with snow coming down hard, lying rapidly and also blowing and drifting with those fierce winds. Such areas as Glenshane Pass, NI as well as the M74 from Happendon services to Beattock Summit and parts of Co Durham, Yorkshire, Derbyshire may see very nasty weather throughout tonight.

Current alert level: Level 2 – Alert and Readiness in one or more regions of England
Issued at: Tuesday 13 December 2011 at 10:41
There is a 70% probability of severe cold weather with some snow and icy conditions between 1500 on Tuesday and 1500 on Saturday in parts of England, especially Midlands northwards. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust’s emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.
Showers will fall as snow at times across many parts of England through the period. Any significant accumulations are expected to be mainly over higher ground but also cannot be ruled out at low levels at times, even in some southern areas. There is a low risk of more persistent snowfall for a time across the far north of England Tuesday night/early Wednesday and, perhaps, parts of the Midlands late Thursday and early Friday , although confidence is lower on this latter detail. On Friday and Saturday, parts of northern England are expected to stay very cold throughout with the low temperatures exacerbated by a brisk northerly wind for a time on Saturday.
