All eyes now on Hurricane Rina as it approaches the Mayan Riviera

Fishermen scramble to secure their boats in Cancun in preperation for Hurricane Rina’s arrival

The timing and track of Hurricane Rina is eerily similar to that of Hurricane Wilma which exploded into the strongest Atlantic Hurricane ever recorded almost to the week back 6 years ago. Wilma struck Florida the same week I got married, so I’m not going to forget Wilma in a hurry.

Though Rina is no Wilma in terms of power, she may still pack a powerful punch across the same area Wilma buzzsawed across back in late October 2005. The track is nearly identical to Wilma’s with it’s southeast approach to the Yucatan resorts of Cozumel and Cancun, Florida’s southwest coast needs to pay close attention to Rina also as, like Wilma did, she may take a sharp right turn once impacted the Yucatan. Though remaining at category 2 status and interacting with dry air, Rina is crossing the warmest, deepest waters in all of the Atlantic basin and thus, when looking at Wilma and the history of this territory, one can’t let their guard down, especially if your visiting or living along the Yucatan.
